“Given love and opportunity, every child and adult can recover. All who know this and have the capacity to help others should assist as they can.” -Dallin H. Oaks

“UNITE” is an acronym meaning Unlawful Narcotics Investigations, Treatment and Education. It reflects the three-pronged, comprehensive approach deemed necessary to combating substance abuse and misuse. Our Commonwealth has been the epicenter for the explosion of opioid abuse. Kentucky’s drug overdose rate is among the highest in the nation. UNITE is a collaborative model striving to prevent abuse of drugs and facilitate recovery. Getting well is what transforms people with substance abuse disorders into healthy and productive members of their families and communities. Operation UNITE has three primary focus areas: investigations/enforcement, treatment and education.

Investigation/Enforcement

UNITE has been a leader in drug investigations, participating in or overseeing many of the largest busts in Kentucky history. Our detectives work with local, state and federal agencies to stop illegal drug trafficking. In addition, we oversee medication drop box sites across the region and collaborate with the Kentucky State Police to promote The Angel Initiative - designed to help people in crisis from drug addiction receive appropriate treatment services.

Treatment

UNITE supplies vouchers to help individuals in our service area to enter long-term drug treatment. Below is a graph showing the increase in the number of applications taken, folks who have entered treatment as well as the number of folks who have completed treatment since our inception in 2006.

Education

UNITE’s school-based and community education initiatives introduce youth and adults to a life without drugs. Some programs are geared to help youth avoid the dangers of the streets. For many, however, that danger is much closer - it is at home. UNITE shows children a different path, teaches them how to avoid peer pressure and provides them facts the can share with parents or caregivers. We also train employers on how to create a drug-free workplace and provide support to their employees and families. Through UNITE prevention programs, tutoring, mentoring and college scholarships, we can help youth find a successful path forward and a life without drugs.
